Look at any campervan listing in New Zealand and you will see three acronyms: WOF, rego and RUC. Nobody explains them, everybody assumes you already know. Here is what each one means, in plain English.
WOF: the safety inspection
WOF stands for Warrant of Fitness. It is the regular safety inspection that cars and campervans on New Zealand roads must pass. The inspector checks brakes, tyres, lights, seatbelts and the general condition of the vehicle.
Vehicles first registered in 2000 or later need a WOF once a year. Older vehicles need one every six months. If a vehicle fails, you get a list of what to fix, then you return for a recheck.
Rego: the fee to use the road
Rego is the everyday word for vehicle licensing. It is a fee you pay for the right to drive your vehicle on public roads, shown by a small label on the windscreen.
You pay for 3, 6 or 12 months at a time, and you can renew online in a few minutes through Waka Kotahi NZTA, the government transport agency. If you are only in the country for a season, buying shorter blocks makes sense.
RUC: road charges, diesel only
RUC stands for Road User Charges. Petrol vehicles pay their share of road costs through a tax built into the pump price, so if you buy a petrol van you can ignore RUC completely.
Diesel vehicles pay separately. You buy RUC in blocks of 1,000 kilometres, online or at an agent, and for a light vehicle like a campervan it costs roughly $76 per 1,000 km. Diesel itself costs less per litre than petrol, so over a long trip the two often end up closer in total cost than they first appear.
What comes with a van from our yard
Every van we sell leaves with a new WOF and current rego, so both of those are already sorted when you drive out. Each van is also freshly serviced and sold certified self-contained, which means it carries the green certificate many councils require for freedom camping. You still need to transfer ownership into your name on the day you buy.
