How our buy-back option works

Most travellers who buy a campervan in New Zealand hit the same problem at the end of the trip. The flight home is booked, the days are counting down, and the van still needs a new owner.

Private buyers know this. The less time you have, the harder they haggle, and the hardest haggling happens in the last week before you fly.

Our buy-back option exists to take that pressure off. Here is how it works, in plain terms.

What the buy-back option is

There is no fixed percentage and no standard formula, because three things decide what a van is worth when it comes back:

  • Condition. A clean, undamaged van with a tidy interior is worth more than one that has had a hard trip.
  • Kilometres. A full lap of both islands adds real distance, and the total on the clock matters to the next buyer.
  • Season. Most travellers sell up in March and April, so autumn prices are softer than spring prices right across the market.

Hamish will talk this through with you before you buy, so you know where you stand from day one. It is a normal part of a viewing at our yard, so just ask.

Why it beats an airport carpark fire sale

You have probably seen the ads. Vans parked near the airport with a phone number in the window, sellers flying out in two days, buyers offering far below the asking price because they can.

With a buy-back agreed, you skip all of that:

  • No spending your last week answering messages and waiting for buyers who never turn up.
  • No paying for extra nights of accommodation while the van sits unsold.
  • No accepting a painful price because your flight leaves tomorrow.
  • Just one visit to our Auckland yard, the paperwork done, and you are free to fly.

Protect the value while you travel

The better the van comes back, the better the conversation about price. A few simple habits make a real difference:

  • Service it on schedule. Keep every receipt. A van with a paper trail is easy to value fairly.
  • Keep it clean. Wipe down the interior, air the mattress, and deal with spills straight away. Smells and stains cost money.
  • Keep the documents together. Ownership papers, the WOF (Warrant of Fitness, the regular safety inspection), the self-containment certificate and its green warrant card, and your service receipts should all come back with the van.
  • Fix small problems early. A chipped windscreen or a slow leak is cheap to sort now and expensive to ignore.

An honest note

Selling privately can sometimes get you more than a buy-back. If you have weeks to spare, a visa that lets you stay, and the patience to run viewings yourself, a spring sale to an arriving traveller may pay better.

The buy-back is for everyone else: people with a fixed flight, a tight plan, or no wish to spend their last fortnight as a part-time van dealer.

It also changes the maths of the whole trip. Buying looks even better against renting when you know Hamish will make you an offer at the end. See buying versus renting, the maths for the full comparison.
