If you have never bought a vehicle before, or never bought one outside your home country, a viewing can sound intimidating. It is not. Here is exactly what happens, step by step.
Book a time first

Booking takes a minute and means the vans you want to see are unlocked, charged and ready when you arrive. We speak English, German and French, so message in whichever is easiest for you.
Getting to the yard
Our Auckland yard is in the west of the city. It is an easy drive from the city centre.

Take your time with the van
A viewing is not a quick look through the window. Open every cupboard. Lie on the bed. Sit in the driver's seat. Run the tap, test the fridge, plug your phone into the sockets, and check the solar setup if the van has one.
Ask about anything you see. Every van we sell is certified self-contained, which means it has the green certificate that lets you freedom camp where councils require it. Every van also comes freshly serviced with a new WOF, the Warrant of Fitness, New Zealand's regular vehicle safety inspection.
Yes, you can test drive
Bring your driver's licence and you can take the van on the road. An overseas licence is valid in New Zealand for up to 12 months from arrival. It must be in English, or carried with an accurate English translation or an International Driving Permit. There is more detail in our guide to driving and insurance on a foreign licence.
A campervan feels different from a car. It is taller, longer and slower to stop. The test drive is your chance to get comfortable before you decide anything.
What to bring
- Your driver's licence, for the test drive.
- Your questions, written down if that helps. No question is too basic.
- A travel buddy if you have one. A second pair of eyes always helps.
No pressure, honestly
You will not get a hard sell here. Our Google rating is 5.0, and reviewers describe Hamish as punctual, honest and helpful. If a van is not right for you, say so. We would rather you drive away in the right van than the first van.
If you say yes
The paperwork happens the same day. Buyer and seller each notify Waka Kotahi NZTA, the government transport agency, of the change of ownership.
You will need your passport and a New Zealand address. A hostel or campground address is commonly used and completely normal.
Before you leave, ask Hamish about our buy-back option, where we offer to buy the van back at the end of your trip.
